Western Wildfire Update: See region’s latest burn damage

IMG 3942Wildfire season is raging across the West. Check here for the latest updates from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) on the total burn damage across the West and the major fires in the region.

NIFC's roots trace to 1965, when the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and National Weather Service agreed to collaborate on national fire planning and operations. The National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have since joined.

Update 9/12/16: The West currently has 15 active large fires that have burned nearly a half million acres in seven states. The largest fires are burning in IdahoCalifornia and Wyoming. To date this year, 42,369 fires have burned 4.75 million acres in the United States. NIFC reports that total acres burned to date actually are lower than last year, which saw 8.65 million acres scorched by this time in the fire season. More

Update 9/6/16: The West currently has 16 active large fires that have burned nearly 600,000 acres in eight states. The largest fires are burning in IdahoCalifornia and Oregon. To date this year, 41,531 fires have burned 4.69 million acres in the United States. NIFC reports that total acres burned to date actually are lower than last year, which saw 8.44 million acres scorched by this time in the fire season. More

Update 8/29/16: The West currently has 32 active large fires that have burned more than a half million acres in eight states. The largest fires are burning in IdahoCalifornia and Oregon. To date this year, 39,734 fires have burned 4.47 million acres in the United States. NIFC reports that total acres burned to date actually are lower than last year, which saw nearly 8 million acres scorched by this time in the fire season. More

Update 8/23/16: The West currently has 32 active large fires that have burned more than a half million acres in 10 states. The largest fires are burning in IdahoCalifornia and Colorado. To date this year, 38,901 fires have burned 4.22 million acres in the United States. NIFC reports that total acres burned to date actually are lower than last year, which saw 7.48 million acres scorched by this time in the fire season. More

Update 8/15/16: The West currently has 24 active large fires that have burned nearly 300,000 acres in eight states. The largest fires are burning in CaliforniaIdaho and Colorado. A U.S. Forest Service firefighter was killed while fighting Nevada's Strawberry Fire in Great Basin National Park. To date this year, 37,194 fires have burned 3.87 million acres in the United States. NIFC reports that total acres burned to date actually are lower than last year, which saw 6.8 million acres scorched by this time in the fire season. More

Update 8/8/16: The West currently has 33 active large fires that have burned nearly a half million acres in 11 states. The largest fires are burning in WashingtonIdaho and California. To date this year, 35,646 fires have burned 3.53 million acres in the United States. NIFC reports that total acres burned to date actually are lower than last year, which saw more than 6 million acres scorched by this time in the fire season. More
