OPENING DAY FOR OHIO’S HUNTERS IS APPROACHING

OPENING DAY FOR OHIO’S HUNTERS IS APPROACHING

COLUMBUS, OH - September 1 marks the opening day of the fall hunting season, with Ohio hunters taking to forests, fields and waters in pursuit of some of the state’s most popular game, including squirrel, mourning dove and Canada goose.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife predicts hunting for doves and Canada geese will be excellent this year. Squirrel hunting should be good. Hunters should still see good numbers of gray squirrels. They should be most abundant in the forested hills of eastern and southern Ohio. The outlook for fox squirrels is expected to be above average, with small woodlots adjacent to crop fields and trees near rivers and streams the best locales.

Rail, moorhen and snipe seasons also open on September 1.  Teal season opens on September 6 and runs through September 21. Read More »

Tire Problems Shouldn’t Deflate Your Day

Last time we talked about tires: why they are prone to punctures and other problems and the type of tools you should store in your 4WD vehicle (No need to get spun out over your tires).

Now I’d like to discuss the more common tire-related problems you’re likely to face while off-road and how to fix them.

Lose a bead – Occurs quite often while making a hard turn on a soft surface. Because the tire is aired down, there isn’t enough internal pressure to keep the sidewalls from collapsing inwards.

GAO Report on Hardrock Mining Released

Hardrock Mining: Information on State Royalties and Trends in Mineral Imports and Exports

Since the passage of the General Mining Act of 1872, miners have extracted billions of dollars worth of gold, silver, copper, and other hardrock (locatable) minerals from federal lands without having to pay a royalty.

Congress is now considering amending the General Mining Act to, among other things, assess a royalty to ensure that the public is compensated for hardrock minerals extracted from federal lands, as more recently enacted laws require for oil, gas, and other minerals. The vast majority of the federal lands where hardrock mining operations occur are in 12 western states, including Alaska (hereafter referred to as the 12 western states).
