Members Launch Endangered Species Act Working Group PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 9, 2013 - Members of the House of Representatives, representing a broad geographic range, today announced the creation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) Working Group. This Working Group, led by House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings and Western Caucus Co-Chair Cynthia Lummis, will examine the ESA from many angles. Throughout this year, the Working Group will hold a series of events, forums, and hearings that will invite discussion and input on ways in which the ESA (last reauthorized in 1988) may be working well, how it could be updated, and how to boost its effectiveness for both people and species.

New study is first to reveal abundance of nonnative plants across 24 states

PORTLAND, Ore. April 30, 2013. Two-thirds of all forest inventory plots in the Northeast and Midwestern United States contain at least one non-native plant species, a new U.S. Forest Service study found. The study across two dozen states from North Dakota to Maine can help land managers pinpoint areas on the landscape where invasive plants might take root.

California Water Atlas Posted Online PDF Print E-mail

Sacramento, CA - The "first-ever" California Water Rights Atlas has been posted online, making thousands of water rights claims available to the public.

The Resource Renewal Institute announced the new website ( http://ca.statewater.org/water-rights ) on Friday. "Water is the most important issue facing California," former California Resources Secretary Huey Johnson said at a conference celebrating the new atlas. "The future hinges on how well we handle it."

President Proposes $1.2 Billion for BLM in Fiscal Year 2014 to Protect Resources and Manage Uses of Public Lands

WASHINGTON, DC – Focusing on renewable energy, safe and responsible mineral development, outdoor recreation and other key priorities, the President’s budget has requested $1.2 billion in appropriations for the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management for fiscal year (FY) 2014.  The request, announced today, represents a $32.6 million or 2.9 percent increase over the agency’s congressionally enacted FY 2012 budget.

EPA Issues Clean Water Act Permit for Small Suction Dredge Miners in Idaho PDF Print E-mail

(Boise, ID - April 4, 2013) Starting today, small-scale suction dredge miners may begin applying for a new federal water discharge permit to lawfully operate their dredges in Idaho’s rivers lakes and streams.  Mining for gold using small suction dredges is a popular activity in Idaho with hundreds of dredges in use, especially during the summer.  Small-scale suction dredge miners (using intake nozzles of five inches in diameter or less and engines rated at 15 horsepower or less) will need to apply for coverage under the new Clean Water Act general permit. Larger suction dredges are not covered by this general permit and need to be authorized under a separate individual permit.
